CarbSMART

Feel more confident with carbs

Low carb, no carb, keto, paleo — when you’re living with diabetes, advice about carbohydrates can feel endless and often confusing.

Carbohydrates can affect your blood glucose levels, but that does not mean you have to cut them out completely or give up the foods you enjoy. The key is understanding which carbohydrate foods work best for you, how much to have and when to include them in your day.

About

CarbSMART is a short, practical workshop that helps people living with type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes make sense of carbohydrates and diabetes. In this face-to-face workshop you’ll learn how to choose quality carbohydrates in a way that suits your life, your food preferences and your diabetes management. By the end of CarbSMART, you’ll have more confidence to make everyday food choices and safely include carbohydrates in your diet without feeling like you have to miss out.

Topics covered

- where carbohydrates come from and which foods contain them
- why some carbohydrate foods may be more useful than others
- what the Glycaemic Index means and how it can help you choose quality carbohydrates
- how carbohydrate “exchanges” can help you balance the amount of carbohydrate across your day
- when to eat carbohydrate foods to help avoid spikes in your blood glucose levels
